Pope Francis Charity and Leadership Awards and CiV Ambassadors Awards

Some 200 guests, including University Presidents, Leaders of Foundations and Catholic Institutions, and Catholic businessmen and  friends, gathered at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC , for the "Caritas in Veritate  Pope Francis Charity and Leadership Award," given annually by Caritas in Veritate to distinguish leaders in the international community and in the Church for outstanding work in charity and leadership. Proceeds from the Award go to the Caritas on Veritate mission, particularly to the Mercy and Peace Project, assisting Christian refugees and the displaced suffering the tragic consequences of the relentless violence in the Middle East.

The Awardees for 2018 included distinguished businessman and women, Diana and Wayne Murdy, Marie and Allan Martin, who together with the first president of Ave Maria University were inducted as CiV Ambassadors. Other Awardees include the president of Catholic University of America John Garvey, Professor Guzman Carriquiry Lecour - Secretary with the VP portafoglio for the Pontifical Commission for Latin America – in absentia and Mrs Lidice Mango de Carriquirry, in absentia, Bishop Emeritus Sam Jacobs and other leaders in the Community.

Caritas in Veritate – CiV Global, is a confederation of charitable and missionary entities that comprises 34 member organizations, with a total of more than 1.4 million people, including over 124,000 volunteers, who together bring "charity in truth” to 84 nations. The members of the confederation are each faithful to their own charism, whether responding with building projects, education, medical care, faith formation or the mobilization of volunteers.

At the Award Dinner, the Founder and President of the confederation, Mr. Henry Cappello, noted that "Together we confront  the different aspects of real poverty, or as Pope Francis calls it, 'that which affects those persons living in conditions opposed to human dignity, that effects persons who are in vice and addiction and lastly that effects persons who are alienated form the Truth and refuse God’s Love'."

Inspired by this transformative, yet challenging message,  and supported by  many Catholic organizations and bishops worldwide, Caritas in Veritatel brings humanitarian aid to those in need, irrespective of race, ethnicity and creed, and at the same time, as Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict's "Magna Carta" for Charity, states, we give the opportunity to all men, to hear, at least once in their life time, the message of the Gospel, who is a person – Jesus himself.  The Church, in the words of Pope Francis, is not an NGO, and our main mission as Church is to share the gospel message with the poorest of the poor.

Mr. Cappello  continued saying that “As a confederation, we are committed to this type of charity and aid that leads to what the Church has known since Blessed Pope Paul VI's Encyclical  Populorum Progressio as 'integral human development.' By 2020, we hope that Caritas in Veritate will have 50 international  organizations affiliated, with a combined 2.5 million members, 2,500 trained leaders, and 60 coordinating  centers reaching 200,000 persons annually with aid and with the Truth. By 2025, we will be able to together reach annually 500,000 people with charity and  the Truth. This can only happen because today, the leaders of these organizations are committed  to join forces, each  moving at their own pace and with their differing strength, for service of the poorest of the poor. The example of Pope Francis, his attention to the poor, the sick and the marginalized, is a great inspiration to us all."

The Award Ceremony was emceed by Hon Alfredo Molina  and Mrs Kathy Brennan Halamandaris during a black tie dinner. Monsignor Anthony Figueiredo, VP of Caritas in Veritate who, because of his commitments at the Synod of Bishops, could not be physically present, sent a message from Rome, His Excellency Archbishop Bernadito Auza Nuuncio to UN, opened the Award Ceremony with prayers and with a short message  about the importance of the work of Caritas in Veritate world wide. Fr.Robert Spitzer, a Founding Director of Caritas in Veritate, and the President The Magis Institute for Reason and Faith, gave the key note address delineating, “Why Caritas must incorporate the “Veritate”- The Truth.”  Henry Cappello, the President and CEO of CiV Global presented the Awards.
