Bread of Life – February

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life

Let us consider first how a father loves his son. Parents love their children even before they are born. At first, their love is a powerful instinct. But instinct is appropriated and surpassed as they give of themselves continuously for the growth and formation of their children. Parents teach their children what they know to be good and evil, and thus form their children to be like themselves.

Furthermore, parents raise their children not only to know and to love what is good but to do so freely, independently of the guidance of the parents. The result is a unique and twofold relationship. First, parents see in their children their own effort to serve their children’s health and knowledge and virtue while the children were dependent upon them. And second, parents see in their children, in their independence, the free and mature decision to love what is good and to enjoy the friendship of their parents. For parents, this is the special, double joy of their vocation.

This special relationship and joy are even clearer between mothers and daughters and between fathers and sons, since mothers are models especially for their daughters, and fathers especially for their sons. And in the latter case it is perhaps clearer still because fathers have less help from instinct and sons more opportunity to stray. To understand the words of St. John, then, we must attend to this supreme joy – the delight of a father in his son.

“God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”

John 3:16

God the Father gave to us His Son. God’s fatherhood differs from our own, yet He chose fatherhood as the model by which to reveal to us His love. He surrendered to us His supreme joy. He gave His Son to suffer our neglect, our sin, and death at our hands.

This might seem impossible for a parent, yet it is fitting to God. God the Father bestows upon His Son His Holy Spirit, and His Holy Spirit is love. By becoming man, Christ gives Himself in love in imitation of His Father – thus Christ is a friend to His Father, like Him, and united with Him though Their Holy Spirit. This is the love of God: God surrenders to us His own supreme joy so that we might participate in it.

And herein lies the mystery of His love: Christ died, and death could not hold Him. God surrendered to us His supreme joy and restored the world to Himself. God gives everything and loses nothing. When we understand and receive His love, when we give and even die in imitation of Him, we cannot perish. To know Him, to love Him is eternal life.

Lord, we pray: Make us love like You, surrendering everything, and so possessing the fullness of life.

“God is love.”
