Bread of Life: August Reflection
God in his mercy sent Jeremiah, the prophet, to speak a word of mercy to the people of Israel, calling them back to fidelity to their covenant with God. They had strayed from the commands of the Lord, like their ancestors. But God is rich in mercy, reaching out to his Chosen people again and again, in spite of their past, and reflecting the glory of his love and mercy.
With these words of mercy also came words of consequence, if they refused to repent and return to the Lord. The leaders of the people refused to heed the prophetic words of Jeremiah and refused to accept the reality of the consequences. As long as they gave lip service to God through external services, they felt that they were pleasing to God.
“Do not hold back a word. It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way “
Jeremiah 26:2-3
How often has God spoken through the prophets of old and of the present moment to us, and we have not responded interiorly. God extends his mercy to us, but there are consequences, if we refuse to respond to his call for deeper repentance and commitment of our lives to him. But if we heed his call, then we will experience the life to the fullest that he offers us.
We pray: Lord, turn us from our evil ways. Place in Your Word in our mouths, send us to those who stray, and bless us with the courage to speak.
“Repent and return to your first love “
