Bread of Life: October Reflection

Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and hear what you hear, and did not hear it
Matthew 13:7

The time of fulfillment had come. The “mystery that was hidden for ages, is now made manifest” (Col 1:26). in the words and deeds of Jesus. From Abraham to Isaiah to John the Baptist, the people of Israel carried within their hearts and collective imagination, a deep longing for the coming of the Messiah. The apostles were the first to hear and see, and by God’s grace to understand “the things into which angels longed to look” (1 Peter 1:12).

What did they see? “And Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up and the poor have the good news preached to them’” (Luke 7:22). They saw the outbreak of the Kingdom of God manifested through the power and authority of Jesus.

What did they hear? “Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe the gospel’” (Mark 1:14). The words of Jesus interpreted the meaning of the deeds He performed. A whole new reality, a new life, the life of heaven was made present in and through Jesus.

Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and hear what you hear, and did not hear it

Matthew 13:17

Jesus longs for us to see and hear Him today. He has promised you a Kingdom and He invites us each day to live in it fully through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts so that we can experience the reality of “the riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col 1:27).

We pray: Dear Lord, may we live with the conviction that you indeed are alive, today, and you’re working in the present changing lives!

On the day of Pentecost…Peter courageously proclaims: ‘Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God … you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. But God raised him up’ (Acts 2:22-24). Peter’s words express the Church’s self-awareness, based on the certainty that Jesus Christ is alive, is working in the present and changes life.

Note: The “Bread of Life” is designed to help users meditate a different aspect of it a week, throughout the entire month.  It can serve as a foundation for personal or group bible study.  I encourage you to start and conclude with a prayer and to ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and appropriate spiritual truths for your life.
