Bread of Life: December Reflection
Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver
2 Corinthians 9:7
“God loves a cheerful giver.” Yes, because He is one! “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” (Jn 3:16). And, “Jesus…who for the joy set before him endured the cross…” (Heb 12:2).
In this pandemic; we may be inclined to save our resources and be less charitable. But God’s nature is the opposite. Where others have greater needs, He gives more generously, not less. He gave His only Son. And even “as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant” (Rom 5:20).
“Each one must do as he has made up his mind.” Pondering how much to share, we are exhorted by St. Paul “to carry more to fulfill the law of Christ” (cf. Gal 6:2)
“Not reluctantly or under compulsion.” Perhaps, we see ourselves as poorer these days; but, hopefully, not as poor as the widow with only two coins who “out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on. (Mk 12:41-44).
“Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”
2 Corinthians 9:7
It is a divine joy to give from almost nothing and to give until it hurts. It is also comforting to know that “sowing generously, we reap generously” (Col 9:6). God will richly provide, so we may be generous in every occasion. Our generosity will result in thanksgiving to God (cf. v.11). The recipients of our love will praise Him and confess the Gospel of Christ (cf. v.13). People will pray for us because they will see God’s grace in us (cf. v.14).
God calls us to charity that blesses others, ourselves and glorifies Him. Will we take our every opportunity?
We pray: Lord; transform me, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to love like You – generously, selflessly and joyfully. Amen.
“A rich man is not one who has much, but one who gives much. For what he gives away remains his forever.”
(St. John Chrysostom)
Note: The “Bread of Life” is designed to help users meditate a different aspect of it a week, throughout the entire month. It can serve as a foundation for personal or group bible study. I encourage you to start and conclude with a prayer and to ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and appropriate spiritual truths for your life.
